As I keep saying, "pirates" is too nice a name for them

They're thugs.

SKorean crew recount beatings by Somali pirates

Sounds reasonable to me

1-armed man wants Maine to allow him a switchblade

UPDATE: Maine legalizing switchblades for one-armed people

Happy Groundhog Day!

Today people look to rodents for indications of an early end to winter. I doubt it's going to happen this year.

Wikipedia lists over 20 groundhogs making predictions last year, and there was (as usual), a division of opinion. Apparently their prognostication record over the years is not so good. So I'm going to take any forecasts for the next few weeks with a non-governmental recommended amount of salt.

I may eat some pork sausage to celebrate, however.

My performer friends sometimes ask the weirdest questions

Any advice on how 2 make a cake splatter more & further when you hit it with a mallet? It needs 2 fly EVERYWHERE!

Stormy Leather asked this on Twitter. She got three serious replies.

EDIT: She got a lot more responses on Facebook.

I ♥ NYC

From the NY Times' Metropolitan Diary column:
While waiting for the next shuttle from Times Square to Grand Central, I notice an ad for an international bank. The billboard shows a Joe Six-Pack type on his recliner in front of the television, can of beer in hand, but has an ecological theme. The caption reads, “Recycling one can saves enough energy to power a television for three hours.”

Directly below the caption, four graffiti writers in succession have weighed in, the first chiding:
“1) ‘One CAN save’
“Or
“2) ‘One SAVES.’
“Never ‘One can saves.’ ”

Beneath which, the second explains:
“They’re talking about an actual can.”

Beneath which, a third comments:
“I love a city where graffiti’s about grammar.”

Beneath which, the fourth adds simply:
“Word.”

Plats du jour--guest submissions

Since Joanne sent me these right together, I assume they're related.

More bad news for the Somali thugs

5 Somalis brought to SKorea to be tried for piracy

And there's also this, not that it's that important except to the two men:

NATO says Danish warship rescues 2 from pirates
